Odsonne Edouard grabbed two goals for the Hoops to take a healthy advantage for the second leg against the Norwegian champions, who controversially sacked manager Kare Ingebrigsten last week.
Rosenborg, who replaced Ingebrigsten with academy director and interim boss Rini Coolen, stunned the hosts as early as the 15th minute through defender Birger Meling.
However, Brendan Rodgers’ side showed their mettle and goals from striker Edouard and fellow Frenchman Olivier Ntcham just before and after the break put them in front.
Edouard, bought for a reported club record fee of $16 million from Paris St Germain in the summer after a loan spell last season, stretched that lead with another well-taken goal in the 75th minute.
Rodgers replaced goalscorer Ntcham, who was on a yellow card, in the second half with Rogic who was returning after his stint with Australia at the World Cup in Russia.
Meanwhile, Mile Jedinak made his first appearance of the preseason for Aston Villa in a friendly against West Ham.
The Socceroos skipper came off the bench with 30 minutes remaining as Villa were downed 3-1.
And Aaron Mooy played the first half for Huddersfield as they beat French side Lyon 3-1.
The Terriers play Chelsea in their season-opener on August 11.
