'Championship here we come': Arsenal fans fume as club hand four players - including David Luiz - new contracts... but technical director Edu insists they 'bring the right balance to our squad'

  • Arsenal have handed new deals to four first-team players, including David Luiz
  • Fans vented their fury on social media just days after Luiz's calamitous return
  • One joked: 'Championship here we come' after the Gunners announced the news
  • Technical director Edu insisted that the players 'bring balance to the squad'

Arsenal fans have reacted with fury after the news that four of their players - including David Luiz - have been handed new contracts.

Three players - Luiz, Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares - have been handed new contracts beyond the current campaign, while loanee Dani Ceballos has extended his deal until the end of the season.

The news has angered sections of the supporters with Luiz enduring a calamitous return to action, while Mari is out injured until November and Soares is also sidelined and has not played a game since joining from Southampton on loan.

Defender David Luiz has agreed a new contract to remain at Arsenal for another year

Fans took to Twitter to vent their anger over the haphazard defender staying on at the club

Taking to Twitter, Gunners fans vented their fury on Wednesday morning, with one writing 'Championship here we come', with a fellow supporter replying: 'At least we'll win the league there.'

While a drop to the second tier is perhaps unlikely, there is considerable anger among the fan base that Luiz has been rewarded with a new deal despite his calamitous return to action this week.

He came off the bench against Man City, made a mistake for the first goal then gave away a penalty and was sent off for the second, meaning he then missed the club's next game - which they lost away at Brighton.

Another fan wrote on Twitter: 'Everything about Arsenal currently is depressing. How do you award a 29 year old Southampton flop [Soares] a 4 year contract and then call it rebuilding?

'David Luiz gives a 0/10 performance and his reward is a contract extension? Goodness me.'

One fan joked that Arsenal would soon be relegated to the second tier of English football

Elsewhere, @OzilThings posted: 'My day is ruined and I woke up no more than 30 minutes ago.'

Despite the fans' fury, technical director Edu was full of praise in his comments on the club's website.

Alongside the announcement of the four new contracts, he said: 'I am really happy that we will have these players in our squad for the future. They have been part of the long-term technical plan Mikel and I have developed. They bring the right balance to our squad.

'David is a really important player for us. He has played most of our matches this season and has been important for the team. His passing, his communication with the team on and off the pitch. He helps everyone.

'With Pablo we're all disappointed he got injured at Manchester City. Since Mikel arrived here he was asking for a central defender who was left-footed. We were really pleased with Pablo - his behaviour, the way he is training, his mentality and his quality. Unfortunately, he has that injury but of course we are really happy to keep him for the future.

'Cedric is also going to be an important player. He has been unlucky with the injuries but he is close to being ready and gives us more strength in the right-back position. We're also pleased Dani will finish the season here. He is making a good contribution and we look forward to him having a strong finish to the season.'

Arsenal currently sit 10th in the Premier League table and face Southampton away next up on Thursday evening.
