Premier League news: Community Shield, Manchester City v Chelsea, Maurizio Sarri, Pep Guardiola

MANCHESTER City and Chelsea face off for the first silverware of the season when they meet in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday. The match is the traditional curtain-raiser for the new season, which begins on August 10.

Coming so soon after this summer’s World Cup finals, both sides are likely to be missing some of their star names.

Midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is not ready to return for City while his Belgium teammates, Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois are set to miss out for Chelsea. Sunday’s clash will also be the first official match for Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri, who moved from Napoli to Stamford Bridge this summer, replacing Antonio Conte.

The Italian arrives with a big reputation and brought with him Jorginho from Napoli.

Chelsea’s last game before the City clash was against Arsenal, a friendly that saw Hazard, Willian, Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi all absent.

“The starting eleven today is very near to the starting eleven in the Community Shield,” Sarri said, after the Arsenal game.

That means Willian, who returned later than expected from the World Cup, may not be included, offering opportunities for others to step up.

One of them could be Callum Hudson-Odoi, a 17-year-old forward, who filled the void against Arsenal.

“He will stay with us for all the season,” Sarri said of Hudson-Odoi, who won a penalty in the game.

“He is a very young player. We have to wait. In the future he will be a very, very strong player.”

City winger Leroy Sane said the arrival of Sarri as Chelsea manager will make the London side into a title threat again this season and a big threat in the Community Shield.

“Chelsea have brought in a really good coach,” he said. “The way Napoli played last season was really attractive. We really suffered against them. “They might need some time to get used to his tactics but they could be a really tough team.”
