Out of the 221 countries ranked in the FIFA rankings only 32 nations will get the opportunity to play in the World Cup this summer. We have the usual heavy weights going toe to toe against each other for the title of the World’s Best. Also, we have some new entries like Iceland and Panama who’ll be participating in their first ever WC. Like in every edition, this time too some big teams will miss out on playing in the World Cup. With teams like Italy and Netherlands failing to qualify, some major names will be left out this term.
We take a look at the teams that will be missed most this summer:
Italy: Easily the biggest name to not qualify for the World Cup. It’s the first time since 1958 that the “Gli Azzurri” have failed to qualify for the World Cup. It came as quite a shock for the Football world that four-time winners failed to qualify when they finished behind Sweden in their qualifier group. Their failure lead to the retirement of legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and Daniele De Rossi and it also resulted in Coach Giampiero Ventura getting sacked. Its unacceptable for a team of this stature to miss out on the world cup but the future of the Italian side looks bright as they have just won the U20 World Cup this summer and also had brilliant campaigns in the U21s and U19s.
Netherlands: Another team with a big history in the world cup, the Netherlands, failed to qualify for the World Cup this summer. Finishing as runner ups in the 2010 edition and third in the 2014 edition, the Dutch missing out on qualifying was something no one could have thought of. Also, having failed to qualify for the Euro 16, it has been a shock fall from grace for the home of total football. With the next generation failing to fill the shoes of the likes of Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Robin van Persie, without a massive drop in quality. The Dutch side has suffered a lot.
Chile: It was a surprise for all when the consecutive previous two Copa America champions missed out on qualifying for the World Cup. Not sure who to blame for this failure. A series of astonishing results saw the Chilean side start the last match day at third, at a qualifying spot, and then dropping to sixth and failing to qualify. Many claim that the big names like Alexis Sanchez and Vargas weren’t in their right mind and didn’t give their all, while many complain about the incompetence of the coach and management. But there is only so much you can do when you drop from 3rd to 6th in the last match day. Faith!
With Chile sitting 9th in the current FIFA rankings, they are the highest ranked team not to qualify for the World Cup this term.
USA: A team that has been ever present in the world Cup, along with Mexico since the 90s. It’s almost certain every time that both these teams are playing the World cup even before the qualifiers start. They are the big guns of the CONCACAF region, but this the UNSMNT(USA) have failed to qualify. USA recently won the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the 6th time this summer but they failed to replicate this form in the qualifiers.
The last time US missed the World Cup was in 1986 so it will be a big disappointment for the fans when they won’t see their team compete this summer in the World Cup for the first time in 30 years.
