Manchester United news: Paul Scholes criticises Jose Mourinho, team’s unimpressive playing style

PAUL SCHOLES has torn into the style of football being played under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, going as far as suggesting Manchester City manager — a notorious football purist — must “hate” it.

The United legend has been hugely disappointed with what Mourinho has delivered on the pitch.

Speaking to BeINSport about Mourinho, he said: “He doesn’t look happy to me, but he may be happy.

“It’s a team that grind out results rather than impress you, but that’s probably what he’s happy with.

“That’s where he’s been at his best over the years.”

Speaking of his club’s noisy neighbours’ boss, he said: “If Guardiola was manager of Manchester United he would hate what he was seeing and it would be different.”

Mourinho may have won the Europa League and the League Cup in 2016/17, but finishing last year without a trophy wasn’t well received by fans and pundits and Scholes described their lack of silverware as a disaster.

Scholes said: “The most important thing to him [Mourinho], I think, is results, he’ll be judged on that.

“Last year was a disappointing year, you don’t have any divine right to win a trophy, but the way they performed in the league wasn’t really the standard required.

“Every year that Manchester United don’t win something it’s a disaster and that will carry on until he tries and wins the league.”

United’s pre-season tour hasn’t got off to the best start, after a goalless draw against San Jose but at least Alexis Sanchez looked sharp, even if Anthony Martial didn’t.

Mourinho is asking the Old Trafford chiefs for more money for the upcoming season, to compete with the other big clubs- despite an impressive line up of expensive players.

This isn’t the first time that Scholes has questioned Mourinho’s choices as there was a bit of tension within the club last year.

Mourinho ripped into Scholes, following the Manchester United legend’s criticism of Paul Pogba.

The Portuguese boss had said: “The only thing Paul Scholes does is to criticise.

“Not every one of us has to be a phenomenal like he was as a player. He was a phenomenal player- that does not mean we all have to be phenomenal.

“ Paul [Pogba] tries to do his best all the time and sometimes he plays very well, sometimes he plays well, sometimes he doesn’t play so well, it’s not Paul’s fault that he made much more money than Paul Scholes, it’s not Paul Pogba’s fault, it’s just the way football is.”

Scholes had said that Pogba didn’t look fit, nor was he playing like a £90m midfielder.
