Manager of the English national team, Gareth Southgate has announced England’s 23-man squad for the World Cup. Although there is a lot of talent in the squad but it is a very young and an extremely inexperienced squad, which he has been heavily criticized for. His way of backing his squad was by encouraging his young players to emulate the heroics of Michael Owen, in the 1998 World cup, where he was just 18 years old. He also motivated his players by urging them to use the World Cup as a platform to announce themselves to the world.

He said “There are so many players in this squad that it could be that moment for – from John Stones and harry Maguire, to Ruben to Dele Ali, to Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford – there are any number of them that could announce themselves”

The young shoulders on which England’s hope of international glory resides comprise of some of Premier League’s stellar performers from the past few seasons. There is the prodigy from United, Marcus Rashford who has been one of United’s most threatening forwards for the past 2-3 seasons despite his relatively young age. Then they have Sterling who has improved immensely under the management of the famed Pep Guardiola and has become one of the best wingers in the world. The same scale of development, center back, John Stones has shown under Pep. Then there is Tottenham’s Dele Ali who has been nothing short of sensational for his club side in recent years. Last of the many talented boys is the remarkable Harry Kane who has been England’s most reliable source of goals since his debut back in 2015 and has been emulating the same form with Tottenham in the league which has seen him win 2 golden boots.

Despite all the talent in the squad. The one thing Southgate is being criticized for the most is not including Jack Wilshere in the squad. Seeing how young and inexperienced the squad is, they could surely need someone with experience like Jack, aside from the experience they also don’t have anyone as technically gifted as Wilshere, in the squad. Hence leaving him out has been such a surprise and considered a mistake by many. The exclusion of Chris Smalling and Joe Hart also turned a few heads.

Undeterred by recent humiliation for England on the international stage, the fans will surely be hoping for a miracle from these very talented and capable youngsters. Could they end England’s woes in recent tournaments ? We’ll have to wait one more month to find out.
